September 30th, 2008Nintendo strikes Wii hotel deal

If you’re going to be staying at the Renaissance New York Hotel Times Square on business, you might need to have someone come get you when it’s time to leave for your meetings.

That’s because the hotel, and several others in the Marriott chain, will now be featuring Nintendo Wiis in their rooms, along with a selection of 20 games. Mass meeting delinquency is sure to follow.

According to a release from Nintendo on Tuesday, the Time Square hotel, along with Marriotts in five cities around the country, are going to begin stocking hotel rooms, or the lounge in one case, with specially outfitted Wiis and games like Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and others.

And in case you’re wondering whether you have to pay by the hour, Nintendo said that guests would be able to purchase an all-you-can-eat package that would allow them to play all they want.

Further, the games would be pre-loaded and therefore will not require mucking about with game discs. Instead, just point your Wii remote at the TV and voila, Wii Fit will pop up for your enjoyment.

No word yet on how many hotel TVs will have to be replaced when guests throw the Wii remote through the screen while playing the tennis game in Wii Sports, or whether such guests will be on the hook for the replacement costs.

For Xbox 360 users, the so-called red ring of death is a worst-case scenario that can cause nightmares about total system failure and the inability to play any more Halo 3.

Since the introduction of the console, in late 2005, some users have suffered through a well-documented series of quality control problems and some have endured system failures on machine after machine after machine.

Microsoft has attempted to handle the problems–and last year extended the warranty for the machine, leading some to feel that, at the very least, they would be covered if they got the three red rings around their console’s power button that indicate total hardware crash.

The ‘red ring of death’ is the last thing any Xbox 360 user wants to see, as it indicates massive system failure.

(Credit: CNET Networks)

All along, the problem has been blamed on the Xbox’s original motherboard, a poorly designed piece of electronics that in many cases simply wasn’t up to the rigors that users put the machine through. But there had been indications that help was on the way in the form of an all-new motherboard, at once smaller, more efficient, less likely to overheat and less expensive, known as “Jasper.”

Now, according to Xbox expert Dean Takahashi at Venture Beat, Jasper-infused Xboxes are finally being spotted out there in the wilds of the marketplace. And presumably, fans of the platform are singing hosannas at the prospect that maybe, finally, some of their brethren might be able to boot up Gears of War without fear of doom.

Actually, Takahashi poses the question of whether Xbox fans will go for the new machines. But I’m not sure why anyone would rather not have an Xbox with the new motherboard instead of one that could blow up–not literally, of course–at any time.

To be sure, those whose original model Xboxes haven’t crashed don’t really have a choice, and I don’t see hordes of owners of the console rushing out to buy a new one. But if you’ve been holding off on buying one, and find that you have a choice, what would hold you back?

According to a blog called Joeygadget, “The key things to look for when buying a new Xbox 360 with the Jasper chipset is a manufacturing date (MFR) as early as 2008-08-06, Lot 8031 and up, and Team CSON.”

Another site, the Xbox 360 DVD Drive Database, reports there is no “substantial evidence that it’s out yet.”

Microsoft did not respond immediately to a request for information about this.

Either way, it sounds like the era of the red ring of death, at least for new buyers, could well be drawing to a close.

And this is important since, with Microsoft’s recent price reductions for the Xbox–the “Arcade” version of the console is now available for $199–it is likely that there will be large numbers of new buyers, especially this holiday season. Unless, that is, the economic situation holds buyers back.

My question is, will the Xboxes with the new motherboard have a smaller power supply than the ugly behemoth that came with the original machine?

September 30th, 2008Playing Iron Man for a day

While wearing a motion-capture suit, CNET reporter Kara Tsuboi shows how her movements are translated instantly to an ‘Iron Man’ character on the screen behind her. The technique is used in an increasing number of films to mix live-action footage with digital, 3D sets.

(Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News)

SAN FRANCISCO–On Tuesday, the DVD version of the mega-hit film Iron Man will be released, and to celebrate, the visual effects superstars at Industrial Light & Magic decided to show off just a little bit more magic behind the movie.

Back in April, ILM invited me and a couple of my colleagues to their fantastic facilities here for a look at the technology behind the famous suit used in Iron Man. Recently, they invited us back to see how the seamless animation in some of the film’s scenes–such as one famous shot involving the throwing of an Audi–was produced.

In particular, they wanted to give us the inside scoop on the motion-capture technology used to create a number of the film’s scenes, a technology that is increasingly being used today that allows directors to see, in real time, while the actors are acting, what animated sequences will look like.

Click for gallery

That’s why we–myself, CNET reporter Kara Tsuboi, and a cameraman–spent several hours on an ILM image capture stage last week: So that Tsuboi could don a motion-capture suit and we could all see how footage of her would translate instantly into an animated Iron Man scene.

The idea is that George Lucas–who owns the effects studio–wants to give filmmakers advanced technological tools that provide them with flexibility and efficiency. And so he staffs ILM with the kinds of people who can make that happen.

“We understand the entire process,” said ILM digital supervisor Michael Sanders, “from writing code to animating creatures to even shooting live elements. So we know each layer in the process. We understand the vision of the key creatives and understand” what the actors are going to do.

The technology used at ILM–and elsewhere, as well–allows directors to mix real filmmaking and virtual spaces, but with full camera control, depth of field, tracking, and panning. The upshot? A filmmaker can have an entire digital set created, then have an actor perform on the image capture stage wearing the motion-capture suit, and see, as the filming is happening, how the actor’s character looks superimposed on the digital background.

And that means that a director–using a special wireless device that lets him or her see the entire mixed-media image in real time–can move around on the stage, looking for the angles he or she wants and creating new compositional choices on the fly.

This device is used by directors to arrange new camera angles on the fly as they film live actors and have the footage mixed with digital backgrounds.

(Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News)

Further, because a film production is using fewer resources to take a crew to and from a physical location, that frees up resources to experiment with different ideas.

“There’s more time to play with it in the virtual space,” said ILM spokesman Greg Grusby, “because you’re not burning money on set.”

Further, because the process is entirely digital–save for the actor’s role, of course–that means results are available much faster. Often, said Sanders, within a couple of hours of shooting a performance, animators have already had their opportunity to work on what has been shot and can deliver a fully formed scene to the producers.

To be sure, this technology has been around for some time. But now, according to Sanders, the wizards at ILM and other effects houses are working on new systems that could, finally, allow animators to create photo-real human faces, doing away once and for all with the dead eyes so familiar to fans of video games and animated movies.

But this kind of advancement might still be as much as five years off, Sanders said.

From impossible to possible

For now, though, the current technology is still hugely valuable to the filmmakers who hire ILM to do their visual effects. For one reason, that’s because the technique allows for putting things on film that might not be possible, or at least efficient, otherwise.

For example, the real-time animation and motion-capture technology could be used to create a scene where a character jumps off a skyscraper. By animating the background, and having an actor jump inside the image capture studio, the two different sets of images can be mixed for the desired effect.

“It crosses the line of what you can actually do,” said Sanders. “You can do battle scenes where there are thousands of people battling.”

In part, this process is done by using not just actors with motion-capture suits, but also proxy props adorned with their own set of reflective sensors. And that means that the footage also captures the movement of the props, allowing the animators to build them into the scenes.

For Tsuboi, taking part in a demonstration of this technique meant putting on a spandex motion-capture suit and having several dozen reflective sensors placed all over her body, sensors that are used to capture her exact motions and translate them to the Iron Man figure being displayed on several screens around the image capture facility.

On the screens, the ILM crew had pre-positioned a generic Southwestern desert background. And as Tsuboi began to do several poses needed to capture her “skeleton,” each pose was reflected instantly by an identical pose by Iron Man.

According to Sanders, the motion-capture system is “not forgiving at all,” meaning that actors need to be very precise in their motion, or else the computers will pick up every little thing. Similarly, someone with, say, an injury might find that the slightest limp will be picked up by the system.

Back in the control room, ILM associate research and development engineer Spencer Reynolds was manning the computers, taking the digital skeleton captured when shooting Tsuboi’s poses, and, with a mouse, clicking on a series of dots on the skeleton as part of a process that tells the computer exactly how her specific shape corresponds to the model of a human body it can understand. That means clicking on the several dots that make up her arm, her leg, her head, and so on. Once he’s done with that, Reynolds told me, the computer can interpret Tsuboi’s motion as that of a human, and not be confused by irregular movements.

Here, after the hat–adorned with motion-capture sensors–fell off Tsuboi’s head, on screen it looked as though Iron Man’s head had come off.

(Credit: Daniel Terdiman/CNET News)

And after having Tsuboi finish the set of calibrating poses, the crew came out and removed many of the sensors, because only a few were still needed once her form was fully understood by the computer.

Tsuboi, in the meantime, was playing around inside the image capture stage, and her every move was being instantly translated onto the screen. Except she had become Iron Man.

Perhaps the funniest moment of all was when she accidentally dropped the sensor-studded hat she was wearing; on the screen, Iron Man’s head suddenly fell off. And when she picked up the hat, it appeared as though Iron Man’s head was in his hands.

September 29th, 2008How to Locate Missing Persons

If you’re having to locate a missing person, then one of the best things you can do for that person and yourself is to hire a private investigator, aside from notifying your local police department. Hiring a private investigator does not mean that you stop doing what you can on your side of the case, nor does it mean you are not supposed to sit back and let others do all the work, but it means that you’ve also harnessed the power of a detective to locate your missing person.

There are a variety of missing persons cases. Some of them involve dead beat parents who do not want to pay child support. Other missing persons cases involve missing kids or missing family members.

Hiring a private detective to find a missing child is extremely important. The more time that passes, the harder it will be to locate a missing child. Statistics have proven that children who are located are usually found within the first 2 to 3 days. You can’t afford to try to do it by yourself, when time is your enemy. That’s when you not only have local law enforcement on the case, but also a private investigator on top of it.

Missing persons cases are solved every single day of the year with the help of a private investigator.

Here are some key steps in locating a missing persons;

1. Write down any and everything you know about the person. This includes full name, date of birth, physical height, weight, eye color, hair color, and any distinguishing marks such as piercings and tattoos. Also note the last known location of the person, as well as their favorite restaurant, their friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, where they worked, allergies and medical conditions and so forth. Don’t leave anything out. What may seem insignificant to you could actually be the key to break the whole case.

2. Next, contact your police or law enforcement agency. They will also ask you a series of questions to help them locate the missing person.

3. While you have police investigating, hire a private detective. A private detective’s priority is a little different than police investigators. Police investigators have lots of cases to work at one time. You are just one of many, many cases that hits their desk in a given day. A private investigator has you as their priority. He or she wants to get the case solved for you, because his or her reputation is on the line.

4. Go over your list of information about the person more than once. After you think you’ve exhausted every piece of information, go back over your list. You’ll discover that there is probably more information that comes to mind about the person.

These are just a few steps to locating a missing person. Remember, time is not on your side, so you have to be able to pull together a systematic strategy find your missing person as quickly as possible.

September 29th, 2008Why You Should Use Skip Tracing?

Skip tracing is the art and science of finding anyone that may be “missing in action” so to speak. This could be a key witness to your court case, a dead beat mom or dead beat dad, lost loves, relatives, or even rip off companies.

The possibility of locating someone will depend on a variety of factors. This includes the length of time that has passed since you have made contact, the geographic area (it’s probably easier to find someone in the USA than in Bombay India) and your available resources.

You could perform your own skip tracing, with just a basic search on the Internet. The first thing you need to succeed is sheer determination. Next, you’ll need to get all of the possible information on the company or individual you are trying to track down. Make a list of everything you know about them, no matter how insignificant the knowledge or information is, write it down.

Here are a few websites that you can visit to get started in your own personal skip tracing:

1.http://www.zabasearch.com2.http://www.google.com3.http://www.reversephonedirectory.com/4.http://www.yahoo.com5.http://people.yahoo.com/

You can do basic searches through Google and Yahoo, and perhaps find a measure of success in your skip tracing, but if you want a real professional on the job, you need to hire a private investigator from Bay State Detective Agency.

If you’re just looking to find a long lost friend, you may be able to just call your directory assistance where that person used to live. If you’re looking to find a dead beat parent, it may be a little harder to track them down. These people have probably put a lot of effort into making it hard for you to find them. With our special knowledge, abilities and resources, we can break the case for you.

We not only search telephone books, directory assistance and public records, but we also have access to court files, property records and other sources of information, that you may not have permission to access. We not only search various sources, but we also verify the information and follow up with it. We exhaust every lead until there is nothing else to be found.

Skip tracing done by a Bay State Detective is going to save you a lot of time and money in the long run. In today’s world, there is little that is not recorded and stored on a computer. This means that both the amount of accurate as well as inaccurate information has increased. Our investigator will weed through the information to make sure the information you are getting from us is verified as accurate. We have years of experience and we know where and how to look so that you get maximum results.

Again, skip tracing is both an art and a science. You have several options of doing it yourself, but we highly recommend retaining the services of a private detective or investigator to do your skip tracing for you. This will free you up to get back to the more important things, whether it is working or taking care of other responsibilities. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Bay State Detective Agency

Use your home desktop to send and receive faxes. Get started on direct marketing from home today! Those were the words that got me, and I believe, a lot of people started on their tele-fax marketing journey. Get a fax numbers directory or a list of contacts and start your marketing effort.

I mean who wouldn’t want to try it? It offers the promise of financial independence, no longer having to wake up at odd hours, attending pointless meetings and dealing with office politics. And the rewards promised to be great. Anything from $25 - $50 an hour for some companies, to a purely attractive commissioned base system, which pays well for every sale closed by you.

All that is needed is a flair for writing sales copy, a good eye and a clear voice. Learn about the product and start telling people how much more their lives will be improved if they were to discover its wonders and potentials. Direct fax marketing has taken off with the inception of digital fax and more efficient interfaces that allow on board computer programmes to send and receive fax through the phone line. The lower costs has encouraged more and more people to try their hand at direct marketing and companies see the opportunity to lower their costs by hiring these virtual operators.

What wasn’t mentioned at the start was that the quality of the fax numbers directory must be excellent and I think the following term hasn’t been used enough – ‘highly targeted’. Good repositories of fax numbers or a contact list of any sort requires the names to be funnelled by criteria and potential purchasing decision, based on the product and industry it comes from. If you are trying to sell a new finance plan, you would target those with disposable incomes, earning above a certain wage bracket coupled with specific criteria like family size, age of kids.

Effective lists are not easy to find, especially with the proliferation of more and more people turning to free lists, given by back end companies who only use them as doorways for their affiliate marketing purposes.

Many online websites offer quality listings and directories, using integrated systems and quality staff that go through, with a fine tooth comb, these lists and place them within specialised categories that help you define and choose a list that will best complement the product or service that you have been told to sell.

Your wages come from this, so I advice you to invest a little time, effort and money into building up good lists. Good lists can produce loyal customers, thus giving you a head start in your direct marketing efforts. You can find various websites on the internet that offer users a wide variety of highly targeted lists, ensuring that products get matched to the right people – always.

If there is one thing you should take away from this article it is this simple, key message – The marketability of the product depends almost on the audience it is introduced to. With the right market, you will see your sales figures shoot through the roof. So consider using a fax numbers directory if you want to increase your sales.

The last time my mother stayed at the hospital every attendant and nurse showed my mother their photo identification card. Several continued by saying not to allow anyone who wasn’t wearing an ID badge to administer medical treatment or medicine. For my mother and I, it was a feeling of comfort.

Presently both of my parents live in a home beside ours and several medical personnel visit my parents to do some kind of therapy or to just check on their overall condition. On a regular basis, there seems to be a flow of home care staff that visits them at home. Occasionally, based on their physical condition, there are people visiting them on a daily basis and it’s nice as we get to know the attendants personally.

It’s definitely surprising to see that most of them don’t wear any kind of identification card as part of their uniform. Both my parents and I have come to accept them at their word as to who they are and why they are there. But letting them into your home always seems to come with great hesitation. Isn’t that a shocking contrast to a stay at the hospital?

Now I’m not knocking the quickly booming home care industry. It’s been an invaluable source for my parents and has saved them many trips and stays at various medical facilities.

What I am saying though is that the home care industry should start working under the same standard as the hospitals. It seems that every nurse, attendant and orderly in just about every hospital that I have visited has always visibly worn an identification card around their neck. Simply by wearing a photo ID card they would greatly add to the comfort level of their customers.

Now it can be a large expense for small home care organizations to add this as part of their overhead if they seek a solution through purchasing equipment; however, there are other solutions such as FullIdentity.com. This company provides both background checks and photo ID cards through an online service at a reasonable price. Larger companies can use a solution like this but it may be more cost effective to purchase their own equipment.

Background checks and photo ID cards should almost be mandatory in the home care industry, although as in many situations it doesn’t require government intervention if the industry takes care of the issue. It has always been a better thing when an industry regulates themselves without government imposing regulations that cost our tax dollars to enforce and also quickly become outdated.

In 2007 there were more than 228,000 home care companies in the US alone. This industry has grown to $54 Billion a year, and is climbing at a fast pace with our aging society. Home care has proven to be a cost effective alternative to hospital stays as well as an alternative to nursing homes. It would just be much better if the home care providers identified themselves as well as the hospital nurses.

September 28th, 2008Obama’s Plan to Tax the Poor

Obama claims that he plans to pay for his spending increases by taxing corporations and the rich, while cutting taxes to the middle class. What he does not tell you is that his tax plans will essentially raise taxes on the poorest Americans. He also does not tell you that his taxes on the rich will not come even close to paying for more tax cuts for the middle class. He says that he will pay for his programs by closing corporate tax loopholes. He does not say which loop holes he will close. Many tax loopholes were created to encourage large corporations to help the poor. Closing these loopholes will hurt many of the poorest of Americans.

There are two other major ways that Obama plans on taxing the poor. One is by raising taxes on corporations and second is by making businesses pay for insurance for people who do not work for their companies. Both of these programs will significantly impact the poor and especially the poorest of all Americans.

Obama like many Democrats, is relying on the general lack of understanding of how taxes work. They want you to think that they are taxing someone else. There is only one group of Americans that pay taxes, that is the individual tax payer. Yes, you can tax companies and corporations but they are not the ones who pay the taxes. The taxes are paid by the people who buy their products or use their services. If you raise taxes on businesses they have no choice but to add the cost into the prices of their products or services. If they do not they go out of business. Below is an example of how taxing corporations affects prices. For the example I will use food because everyone including the poorest of the poor has to buy food.

The example is a can of pears. Since almost all farmers have incorporated to be able to stay in business, they will have to raise their prices. They send the pears to a packing house that is incorporated so they have to raise their price. A trucking company takes the pears to manufacturer to can the pears, they have to raise their price to pay the corporate taxes. The pears are sent to a national distributor, who has mark up their price. The distributor sends the canned pears to the local grocery store, which is also incorporated, so they have to raise their prices as well. This means that at least 5 different corporations have had to raise their prices just so you can buy a can of pears.

It works this way for every product manufactured in America. It does not matter if it is food, cars, electronics cosmetics pharmaceuticals or anything else. If you raise taxes on corporations the consumer has to pay more for every product they buy.

The second way Obama plans on taxing the poor is in his health care plan. His plan calls for all companies (incorporated or not) to pay for health care not only for their employees but they will also have to pay into a pool for people who do not work for their companies. When you make companies pay for insurance for people who are not employed by the company then you raise their costs. They have no choice but to raise their prices to be able to make ends meet. Who ends up paying or the insurance for 45 million Americans? You do! Under Obama’s plan, everyone will have to pay more, even the people who cannot now afford to feed and clothe their families.

To sum up there are three ways Obama’s plan will affect the poor.

1. Closing corporate loopholes designed to help the poor.2. Forcing the poor to pay for the many levels of price increases due to corporate taxes.3. Forcing all business to pay into a pool to cover those who do not have insurance will raise prices on the products that the poor purchase.

September 28th, 2008Keeping the Earth Beautiful

I recently discovered that April has been dubbed, Keep America Beautiful month. I am fortunate to live in a well-kept area but even here there is evidence of abuse and neglect of the earth. I imagine God must just shake His head in disappointment at the way we’re treating this beautiful world He created. 1 Corinthians 6:9 tells us that people who destroy the earth and everything in it do not qualify as citizens of the kingdom of God. Although I am not a hard-core environmentalist, I’m thinking it’s probably a good idea to be good stewards of everything we have, and do our part to take care of the beautiful world which God entrusted to us.

I also think it’s a wonderful idea to educate our kids about ways they can help keep the earth in a state that glorifies the God who created it. And the sooner we start teaching them how to do it, the more beautiful it will become. So although this holiday is technically, “Keep America Beautiful,” the principle is the same around the world. Here are three things we can do with our kids to keep our earth looking beautiful.

1. RECYCLE – There are several ways you can recycle. Ask your trash pick up for a recycling container in which you can toss recyclables.

• Cans and bottles – Interesting fact: Every three months, the U.S. throws away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial airline fleet.

• Paper – Interesting fact: each day American businesses generate enough paper to circle the globe at least 40 times.

• Cardboard - Interesting fact: Out of ever $10 spent buying things, $1 (10%) goes for packaging that is thrown away. Packaging represents about 65% of household trash. Recycle that packaging!

• Material Goods – Instead of throwing out those clothes and toys you no longer want, give them away. There are plenty of wonderful organizations that would welcome your used items.

2. CLEAN UP – Of course you want to discourage your kids from any type of littering. But why not take it a step further? The next time you go to the following places with your kids, take ten or fifteen minutes to throw away trash you find on the ground. Point out how much prettier the area looks without all the junk scattered around as well as a safer place to play. Places that might be in need of a clean-up:

• Park• School yard• Playground• Your neighborhood• Baseball fields• Nature trail

3. REUSE – Whenever possible, reuse normal household items. Here are a few things you may be able to find another use for:

• Jars – decorate and use to hold all sorts of household items• Bags – use as trash bags• Boxes – for storage• Coffee cans – use as a planter, a bank, or to hold kitchen scraps• Clothing – make into other items such as purses, quilts, cushion covers or doll clothing• Greeting cards – use the cover as a postcard or frame it and hang it on the wall.• And more…put on your creativity cap for other ideas.

Don’t forget, every little bit helps! Get qualified as a citizen of God’s kingdom and keep our Creator smiling by doing your part to help keep America (and the rest of the earth) beautiful.

Far too many of us still think about science fiction films whenever we consider the robot. Although these films certainly did entertain us for many years, the fact of the matter is that there are very few humanoid robots that are in existence. Even if there are some of these robots that are available, they are nothing like the ones that we remember out of science fiction shows, such as Buck Rogers or lost in space. What robots are, however, are an electromechanical system that moves according to design in order to complete a task or tasks that could otherwise be done by a human.

The most common type of robot that is used in modern day society is used in an industrial setting. Most of these robots do something that is very specific, such as spot welding or putting a piece of equipment together. The automotive industry is one of the largest users of the modern-day robot. Although these do certainly help in getting the automobiles out onto the road, most people did not welcome them to the line as readily as the company did itself. As a matter of fact, many of these robots put people out of a job because they were able to do the same task that the humans did faster, more accurately and without needing a regular paycheck.

You might also be surprised to find out that one of the modern-day uses of robots is also spray painting. If you have ever spent time painting in an industrial setting, such as painting automobiles you realize that it takes a very special touch to get things even. A robot is able to apply even pressure on a consistent basis and then move the paint in such a way that it will be smooth and even, every time it is done. This has also put some humans out of work over time but it also helps to keep humans out of potentially hazardous areas where paint fumes can be a real problem.

Assembly is also something where modern-day robots are put into practice. This is especially seen on assembly lines where it is necessary to do a repetitive task without stopping. Robots are typically able to be designed to complete these tasks on a regular basis. Not only that, they do so without any repetitive stress injuries, such as is what is seen in humans. They also tend to be much more accurate and as long as they are programmed properly, they can work at these things indefinitely.

Regardless of what we are trying to put together, from an automobile down to a single computer chip, robots can help to make the work more accurate and can churn out more than a human worker. Although there will always be times whenever the human touch is needed, robots are able to take care of many of these task in an industrial setting just as efficiently or perhaps even more efficiently than their human counterparts.
